If we are followers of Christ, we don't have any problem confessing that we are sinners in need of a Savior. That general confession rolls off our tongues very easily. It's when we are confronted about a particular sin in our lives, either by the Holy Spirit or someone else, that we choke and often attempt to deny or defend our sin. Why is that? One reason is that while our pride allows us to admit that we are sinners in a general sense (just like everyone else), it doesn't want to admit to particular sins such as gossip, impure thoughts, envy, lust, hatred, jealousy, anger, and so on. We would much rather recite the Lord's Prayer in Matthew 6 ("forgive us our debts as we forgive our debtors") than humbly pray along with King David in Psalm 139, "Search me, O God, and know my heart. . .see if there is any wicked way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting." God's Word warns us about the danger of not fessing up to our sins, but also promises blessings if we do. If we don't get specific in dealing with our sins before the Lord, we will have a difficult time turning from them and pursuing righteousness. As we read our Bibles, we should pray that the Holy Spirit will show us our sins, then seek his forgiveness and help with repentance.
"He who covers his sins will not prosper, but whoever confesses and forsakes them will have mercy." Proverbs 28:13
