Joel spent the weekend at Camp Barakel, enjoying the fellowship of other Christian men and the teaching of Bob Bevington. Though you might not recognize Bob's name, you'll most likely recognize the name of the co-author of two of his books...Jerry Bridges. Together they wrote The Great Exchange: My Truth for His Righteousness and The Bookends of the Christian Life, the latter being the topic of the men's retreat. From the introduction: "When we become united to Christ by faith, God places a set of bookends on the bookshelf of our lives. One book end is the righteousness of Christ; the other is the power of the Holy Spirit...Why are these two gracious provisions from God the bookends of the Christian life? And how do we lean our books on them? This book will answer those questions" (pp. 15-16).
Joel also brought home Red Like Blood: Confrontations with Grace, the book Bob co-authored with Joe Coffey. In this book "you will find story after story of brokenness and the grace that entered in. Some stories are from Joe, a pastor's kid turned pastor. Some are from Bob, a prodigal come home. And some are from the many inspiring characters they have met along the way. The stories are often raw and always brutally transparent. Because wherever real grace flows, real brokenness was there first" (from the back cover). Check out the website here.
In this video, Joe Coffey discusses the confrontational aspect of grace in the lives of believers.
