For those interested, a reader sent me this link to the Mackinac Center's study on the cost of remedial education to Michigan colleges and universities. The information affirms the gravity of the problem and offers suggestions for solutions. My intent is not to place complete blame on the public school systems, because I know some private schools and home school situations are also irresponsible regarding their standards of education. Ultimately, parents need to be aware and concerned about the quality of their children's education, and act accordingly. This requires parents to do more than peruse the grade card...look at their work, read their compositions, listen to them read, appraise what they are reading, etc. In other words, be involved.
