Ignorance is not Bliss

My friend Marilyn shared the following story with me last night, and I asked her to be a guest blogger. Sometimes we take so much for granted regarding the dissemination of information to the masses. And I would like to encourage everyone to check out Red Envelope Day and read about an upcoming opportunity to communicate our pro-life message to the White House. President Obama has promised to sign the Freedom of Choice Act, a law that would nullify any federal or state restrictions on abortion. Please continue to pray for our country.

From Marilyn:

Last weekend I volunteered at an information table for the Bay County Right to Life at a local Women’s Expo. Area businesses, hospitals, charitable organizations and other exhibitors filled a large convention center with tables of information and items for sale. The place was packed, filled with women of all ages out for an afternoon of shopping and fun.

When I first agreed to volunteer, I wondered to myself why Bay County Right to Life would see the need to have an information table at such an event. Doesn’t everybody know the facts regarding unborn babies, abortion and partial birth abortion? I was in for a surprise.

One of the items on our table was a display that included 4 anatomically correct soft plastic models of a baby in the womb at approximately 15 weeks, 20 weeks, 24 weeks and 30 weeks. They resembled dolls, and the weights were also correct, making the 30 week model a full 5 pounds. I observed many women in the following four hours, some stopping and most that stopped carefully looked at the baby models, often holding them in their hands just a they would hold a live baby.

“You mean they have arms and legs before they are born?” was a typical question. Incredulous at first, I answered, “Of course!” As more women asked similar questions, I found that about 70% of the women under the age of 40 simply had no knowledge of what an unborn baby looks like, and were totally surprised to find out that babies in the womb do indeed have arms, legs, fingernails, a beating heart and the ability to feel pain. It was obvious that some of the women were thinking deeper, because as they held a model in their hands, they would ask, “To what size is abortion legal in Michigan?” We would point to the 24 week, 3 pound model, and a shocked look came over their face. When we explained the facts about partial birth abortion, their faces became ashen.

These women are not being told the truth in their schools, in their churches, or by the liberal media.

Like-minded readers – there is work to be done! Explaining the truth and the changing of hearts is the only way, one woman at a time.

  1. I know-- amazing, isn't it? The amazement of just hearing my child's undeniably independant, live heartbeat was enough to make me want to protect that tiny being... imagine if abortion-bound women even just heard their child's heartbeat before they made their decisions! Maybe we should start campaigning to put dopplers in crisis pregnancy centers, which pick heartbeats up months before an ultrasound will show a baby!

  2. The increased use of ultrasound machines in crisis pregnancy centers has had a significant impact on reducing the number of abortions. Nationally, seventy percent of abortion-minded women change their mind once they have seen the living baby in their womb.
