We were optimistic going into the election that the Bay County library millage renewal would pass this time...it did not. The renewal represented 60% of the operating budget, so naturally the library system will have to make some very tough choices. What is really frustrating about the situation is that we finally got a beautiful new facility (along with improvements to the branches) about a year ago. The library system was woefully under-equipped and under-stocked prior to the improvements. Granted, there were many "glitches" in the building improvements process, but I still find it hard to believe that the community would vote to debilitate the libraries. I am almost ashamed to admit this is a reflection on the community's lack of literacy-mindedness. By the way, this is the first place we've lived where library operating budgets are up for renewal, and I believe that is a mistake in itself.
