MISTAKEN IDENTITY

Joel and I have decided our "friendly" critter definitely is not a rabbit, but we don't know with what we are dealing. The critter has burrowed about 3 or 4 feet horizontally into the ground, and it doesn't leave any trails of thrown dirt from the digging. The situation is causing me some distress because the hole is close to the house. I need reassurance that whatever it is, it can't bore through the basement wall. That's nightmare material for me. Our neighbors had a woodchuck in their basement last summer, and they had no idea how it got there. Nasty creatures! I had never seen a woodchuck until one entered our backyard a few years ago to pick a fight with Andre. It was all we could do to get Andre in the house after the fight began, and he was extremely agitated the rest of the day. The woodchuck ran away into...you guessed it...our woodpile!

Joel got some advice at work on how to eradicate the rodent. So tonight, he first tried the gas chamber method by running car exhaust into the hole via the garden hose. Nothing seemed to happen with that method, so he went to plan B. He dropped several moth balls in the hole, refilled the hole again, and placed more moth balls around the hollyhocks. This might not keep the critter away, but it could very well keep any visitors from approaching our house. We'll keep you posted.
