May 1st, or May Day, is a fond childhood memory of mine. Our school would often do the the Maypole dance and make May baskets to celebrate the special day. The real fun began once we got home from school though. More May baskets were assembled from construction paper, paper cups, wallpaper scraps, etc. and filled with flowers (usually lilacs) and candy. Then we stealthily delivered the baskets to our friends' front porches, rang the doorbells, and ran. The object was to not get caught making the delivery. Some people claimed that if you were caught, you got kissed. (YUK!, if you're in elementary school.) We continued this tradition with Ashlea and Tyler until we moved to Michigan. People here don't seem to know about May Day, so I was pleasantly surprised when Robin (at the mission) gave us tulips today in honor of this celebration of spring. I think May Day is the beginning of the most romantic month of the year. I wonder if Ashlea thought to sing "The Lusty Month of May" from the Camelot soundtrack today. : )
