Good thoughts from my friend, Ben. I have to agree that a hand-written note (or card) is usually the best way to encourage someone, for they are often tucked away, or prominently displayed, for ongoing encouragement. I'm afraid this is becoming a lost art in the age of emails and Facebook messages.
