Butterflies in Bloom

It has been a gorgeous week here in Mid-Michigan, and with daylight savings time in effect, it's really beginning to feel like spring! Joel and I enjoyed a visit to the Dow Gardens after work yesterday to see the Butterflies in Bloom exhibit, featuring over sixty varieties of butterflies. I struck up a conversation with a volunteer on duty about the "stresses" of working a butterfly exhibit (a Brian Regan moment for those of you in the know). He said that because the exhibit is funded by the Department of Agriculture, there is some degree of stress involved in complying with the DOA's procedures. For instance, when a butterfly dies, they have to put it in a plastic coffin (Ziploc bag) and immediately put it in the freezer. All the deceased butterflies are then sent to the Department of Agriculture, and who knows what happens to them then! I'm picturing a dead butterfly warehouse - smaller version of the warehouse in Raiders of the Lost Ark. Anyway, here are a few of the pictures we captured:

  1. Stunning pics, Jeanette. Regarding the dead butterflies, whatever happens to them I'm quite sure my tax dollars are being used wisely. :)

  2. Yes, I'm sure we tax payers are properly caring for our own...dead butterflies. ;)
