The Names of God

I'm beginning to read through the book God's Names by Sally Michael.  It's not an esoteric read; rather, the book was written for children's comprehension of who God is and how he interacts with the world.

Perfect.

According to the author, the Bible has over 200 names for God!  And if you count all the nicknames and titles, there are over 700 names!  Why so many?  Not only does God want us to know his character through names and titles, he also wants us to trust in him as the one true God.

Let's start at the beginning. . .

In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth.  Genesis 1:1

The Hebrew word for "God" in this verse is Elohim, meaning strong, mighty, and powerful Creator.  God created the heavens and the earth out of nothing, by fiat. He called all his creation into being and upholds the universe by the word of his power (Hebrews 1:3).  Although we confess this mystery, we cannot explain it.  Indeed, when we consider the works of his hands, we have abundant reasons to praise him as Creator and Sustainer of the marvelous order and beauty of the universe.  And we are reminded that nothing is too difficult for Elohim.

Ah, Lord God!  It is you who have made the heavens and the earth by your great power and by your outstretched arm!  Nothing is too hard for you.  Jeremiah 32:17
