What Kind of Love is This?

Last night Dr. David Murray drew our attention to I John 3: 1 - 5, that calls us to "behold the manner of love the Father has bestowed on us, that we should be called the children of God." His first point was that we should behold the Father's adoption of us, when we are so unworthy. It is really staggering to contemplate! To help us understand, Dr. Murray applied factors that people typically use in selecting a child for adoption: the child's genes, his environment, his education, the child's report, and his prospects for a future. Consider our state before our conversion to Christ. What about our genes? We were born in sin, conceived in iniquity, and our "Father" was the devil. What about our environment? We were spiritually poisoned and suffered from the effects of a sinful world. Our education? We were educated and self-taught in the ways of sin. Our report? Again, a life of sinful living. And our prospects? Eternal death in hell. Behold! Where did this love come from that the Eternal Almighty God would want to adopt us into his family? It is a love that is not from this world. God took the initiative in our adoption; He chose us! And it was made possible because the Son of God loved us enough to become the perfect sacrifice for our sins. Dr. Murray encouraged us to saturate ourselves in this truth until it thrills our soul. Amen!
