Fixing Our Eyes on Jesus

Let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, fixing our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of faith. Hebrews 12:1b-2a

This is a very familiar passage of Scripture for many Christians, but have we taken time to really define what it means to fix our eyes on Jesus? Carolyn
Custis James offers these thoughts from her book, When Life and Beliefs Collide (chapter 7):
  • Fixing our eyes on Jesus helps us head into the current situation banking on his goodness.
  • Fixing our eyes on Jesus means getting serious about our theology by putting ourselves under his tutelage, digging beneath the facts of scripture to understand his character.
  • Fixing our eyes on Jesus means reminding ourselves of all that he is to us now. He brings meaning to our routines and energizes us to tackle the difficult tasks at hand.
  • Fixing our eyes on Jesus gives us hope to offer disheartened husbands and hurting friends, and the wisdom we need to raise children who will fix their eyes on him too.
  • Fixing our eyes on Jesus keeps the big picture ever in front of us - that God is on his throne, that we are loved, that he is at work in the present moment accomplishing his purposes.
  • Fixing our eyes on Jesus is, in itself, the single greatest cause of joy, as we delight in God himself.
  • Fixing our eyes on Jesus means advancing from baby food - the basic concepts of Christianity - to an adult diet of deeper theological truth about Jesus.
  • Fixing our eyes on Jesus means that instead of always reaching into his "pockets" for something we want, we will reach for him.

  2. It's so easy to lose sight of these truths if we aren't continually renewing our minds.
