After a long arduous process, our friends Mark and Judi were officially recognized as Shelly's adoptive parents today in a ceremony at the county court building. What's significant about this adoption is that it was done posthumously, and it will be the only adoption in Michigan of that kind. Mark and Judi began the adoption proceedings prior to Shelly's death in 2005, but obstacles prevented it from becoming a reality. Through the efforts of a number of people, including Representative Jeff Mayes and his staff and Judge Tighe, a bill was signed into law making them Shelly's legal parents, no longer former foster parents. We, and a room full of other friends and family, were blessed to be part of the ceremony.
