Happy Birthday...Barakel Style

I don't think it's the empty nest per se that bothers me...it's that our times together as a family are so limited and will become even more so after Ty moves to Kansas. I'm thankful that we were able to enjoy an hour or so on Sunday afternoon to celebrate Joel's birthday...such as it was. We were blessed to have Ashlea's friend Brittney along on this trip. Ty left his campers in the charge of another counselor while we toured the west side camp, the museum in the chapel, and the blockhouse (we even went up on the roof). Right before our time was up, Ty called his tribe together to sing "Happy Birthday" to Joel, and we quickly ate birthday cake. Joel had to show Ty his new K-State dad license plate that he received from Kansas relatives...he is one proud papa!

Ty's interesting story of the week was that a bear rummaged through the trash barrels five nights in a row, even breaking the 2 x 4, the chains, and the trash barrel lid to get to food. Ty and Kent went out late one night with flashlights and knives to observe the bear in action. I asked exactly what he planned to do with the knife if need be. He said, "Go for the jugular!" Then he said that's why he took Kent along...Ty can out run him! ;)
