In Training

Until now, my main objective in buying bananas was to make banana bread. The possibility that someone else in the family might actually eat them raw (bleh!) was of little consequence to me. But that's now changed. I had my regular six-month check-up with my doctor, and, because of a medication I'm taking, she is concerned that my potassium level might be low. She said she wanted me to have a blood test done, and I mildly protested, "Didn't they check that when I had the blood work recently done?" (really meaning why didn't they check it when I had all the other blood work done?). She wrote the lab order, and I left the office, already devising my own plan. Rather than going under the needle once again, I would start eating bananas!

My first attempt didn't go so well. I began eating one in the morning with breakfast, and I periodically nibbled on it until it was gone...mid-afternoon. The next day, I suggested to Joel that maybe we could share a banana (as in let's do this together...beginning with small amounts), and he responded with something like, "What's the point in that? I like bananas!" I could clearly see that I'm on my own with this one. Although, Joel is more than willing to be my conscience in the matter. Last night he said, "I noticed you didn't eat your banana today. There was one left in the bowl this morning...I left it for you, and it's still there." I told him, "I know. I planned it that way. I decided to start this process by eating bananas on alternate days, and today wasn't my day to eat one." I ate the banana this morning, and I'm happy to report that it only took me about three hours, a marked improvement. Maybe it would help to start logging my times. ;)

  1. Good grief. And you used to buy bananas nearly by the dozen and make us eat them. Have fun!

  2. Did I make you eat them? Well, either I was concerned about your potassium or it was a moment of "mom's torture." If that were the case, just be thankful it wasn't liver! ;)

  9. I think I might have some good news for you. Potatoes actually have more potassium in them than bananas!
