This afternoon, I attended the memorial service for Barbara, a rescue mission volunteer. Barbara came to us a couple years ago, shortly after moving to Saginaw in her retirement years. She took on the challenging job of assisting in the mission's kitchen. I say challenging because she was working in large part with mission clients, and yet she never seemed intimidated by the men. She just mothered them the same way she mothered everyone else...very gentle but very direct. And along with her directives, she consistently encouraged them in the Lord. Barbara was completely unashamed about sharing her faith and inquiring about others' spiritual condition.
Barbara died after battling cancer for several months, but she died well, to the glory of God. At the service today, we heard from her family, neighbors, church family, her chiropractor, and caregivers about her Christian testimony. We heard about her confidence in God's sovereign and loving will for her life, even unto death, and we heard about her longing to be in heaven for the sole purpose of seeing Jesus, her Savior. He was, and continues to be, her all in all.
