We spent part of our last day in Georgia on Tybee Island, home of old Fort Pulaski. The battle at this fort in 1862 involved the first significant use of rifled cannons, which could accurately shoot the bullet-shaped cannonballs over two miles. After thirty hours of bombardment, the fort's eight-foot thick walls were rubble, and the South surrendered. The use of rifled cannons signaled the end of masonry fortifications. I loved the draw bridge and moat...and yes, there are alligators in the moat.
