Ramblings

Since our area got another blast of winter this morning (this time in the form of freezing rain), we didn't venture out for worship. By afternoon, the road conditions had greatly improved, so we planned to attend the evening service. Only one problem...it was canceled and we didn't know it (we should have checked our email). As we turned the corner onto Gordon St., we realized there were no cars around the church...not a good sign...but we also noticed two young people standing at the corner as if they were waiting to go in. They followed us in the church and told us they were there for a class assignment. The humanities teacher at Midland High instructed them to visit two denominations different from their own in order to write a report on the similarities and differences. So Joel and I tried to explain Presbyterianism to a Lutheran and a Catholic...which I found rather amusing since we've only been in a Presbyterian church (PCA) for about three years. Throughout our discussion, we reiterated the message of the gospel...that our salvation is by faith in the finished work of Christ on the cross, not by any works that we could do to earn God's favor. Joel was quick to think about providing them with a copy of the Westminster Confession, our statement of faith. So even though the evening didn't unfold as we planned, we were thankful to be available to speak with the students...it was good.

On our way home, we went through the Arby's drive-thru, and Joel pulled another one of his "remember when" questions on me. This time it was "Do you remember the first time we ate at an Arby's?" I just looked at him and chuckled, indicating that I didn't have a clue. "It was in Oklahoma City in 1979," followed by his standard, "but don't ask me how I remember that." I guess I haven't made a point to commit to memory all my fast food firsts (or a lot of other trivia for that matter), with the exception of McDonald's, because that was a big deal. So, once again, I just shook my head and wondered two things...how does he do it...and why?

  1. Well, it was a God thing that you didn't check your email. Obviously God wanted someone there for those two students.

  2. hmmm... a "God thing"

That would imply, logically, that there are things that are not "God things"...
