A couple in our church recently started a book club, whereby each month a different person leads the discussion of the book of their choice. I thought I was up to the challenge, but after reading three chapters of the first book, Leisure: The Basis of Culture by Josef Pieper (a German philosopher), I'm here to tell you, it's work! I'm taking notes as I plod through each chapter, so hopefully I will at least be able to ask some intelligent questions. I don't see myself offering any great insights to the discussion. If you accept Kant's view that man's natural bent is contrary to the moral law, and therefore the effort of will required in forcing ourselves to do some action determines it's degree of goodness, then the act of reading this book must be extremely morally good. Philosophy...I've seen what it's done to my brother, and I'm not sure I want to go there. ;)
