Home Again

After having traveled 2000 miles in five days, we are glad to be home, but we very much enjoyed our trip with Ashlea and Anne, a friend from her church. Anne did an internship at the Mackinac Center for Public Policy a few years ago, so she is familiar with our area and knows several people we know...small world. She kept us entertained on the road with oral readings of a number of O. Henry short stories. The first leg of our trip was to Asheville, NC where we toured the historic Biltmore Estate. Built by George Vanderbilt in the 1890s, the home contains 255 rooms, and I believe it is the largest residence in the United States. We spent Friday afternoon touring the home and the winery on the estate, then returned Saturday morning to tour the gardens (I'll post those pictures later). The architectural detail and craftsmanship are pretty amazing...especially the dwarfs and gargoyles. ;) (Click on the pictures for a larger view.)

  2. Notice that I didn't post a picture of myself tasting the wine? That's because I should have stopped after four tastings. You have to understand that it took quite awhile before I didn't get a buzz from the communion wine. ;)
