Baffled

I don't know where Ashlea and Tyler get their propensity for writing poetry...I certainly don't have that inclination (I'm 75% to 80% left-brained), and Joel is an engineer after all. One of our poems would probably begin something like "There once was a dog named Blue..." (you get the idea). Maybe it's a recessive gene Ashlea and Ty both got, similar to how they both have wavy hair when Joel and I can't claim a single curl...except by artificial means. If you read Ashlea's blog, you are aware that she occasionally posts some of her poetry. Since Ty no longer has a blog, he gave me permission to post these two poems that he wrote this week...proof that there is more rumbling around in his head than thoughts of sports, homework, and video games. ;)

Poem 1

Countless mirrors reflecting light
On the darkness down below
My soul longs for your sweet aloe
While gazing upward in the night.

Now cut loose of all my past
Forward I move, as one in haste
Allow me, Lord, one thing I ask
Of heaven give me some foretaste.

Wonder endless on this earth
Daily lost amongst the mirth
Your awesome power brought to light
While gazing upward in the night.

Glory endless all around
Yet our hearts are tightly bound
Always pure and sheer delight
To gaze upward in the night.

Please, O Lord, not let me be
As the one that does not see,
I long to ponder on your might
While gazing upward in the night.

Poem 2

Where is the confident young man?
The one that had his best friends fooled,
Level-headed and reasonable he
Has he gone and died at sea?

That man is gone
Was taken away
Had not the fortitude to stay
Sad it was what did befall.

Tell us, then, of his sad fate
Lest we also tread his path of late
Blind leading blind must not be,
His error now we need to see.

Passion! Passion was his end,
Like all good and reasonable men.
It was passion, his quick downfall,
That caused him to let down us all.

Passion? No, how can that be?
For reason ruled his every move,
And emotion he would not approve
This a turn we did not foresee.

Alas! My friends, tis sadly true,
Yet, the culprit is common to you
Reason and logic all short fall,
When woman creates a heart enthralled.

  1. Tyler,
I enjoyed reading your poetry very much. Keep writing. Who are your favorite poets? I have a book I really like. It's called The Voice That Is Great Within Us, I don't even know if it is still available. It's a great collection also Black Voices is good too, but may not be in print anymore. Anyway, I hope to read more of your work.
