Winter Reading

The cold winter months are difficult for me. I really do not like leaving the house unless I have a reason, and it better be a good one. So to help pass the evenings, I do a lot more reading than I would when the warm weather beckons. A couple weeks ago, I pulled Vienna Prelude off the shelf - the first book in the Zion Covenant series by Bodie Thoene. I was immediately swept away to the pre-WWII era in Europe and captivated by Thoene's intricate plot and character development. I am now in the second book, Prague Counterpoint, that depicts the social and political climate leading up to the insidious Nazi takeover of Austria. I'm enjoying the series now just as much as I did when I first read it about fifteen years ago. It's excellent and accurate historical fiction, and there's even a little romance (I can't wait for Elisa and John to finally realize they love each other!). My evenings are far from dreary as I am transported to another time and another place..."experiencing" life as it was in Europe during that pivotal time. That's what good historical fiction is all about.
