At the Mission

Shortly before I left work today, Brenda commented to me that there seemed to be an overriding calm about the mission, and I had to agree. We praise God for that calmness, especially since it was the beginning of the Great Thanksgiving Banquet week, and the mission was a flurry of activity. We had volunteers in to chop onions, celery, and bread for the dressing (600 servings); student volunteers in to assemble 350 bags of groceries; and other volunteers in to reorganize the ladies' clothing room, which was no small task. The rewarding part is knowing that the volunteers really had fun while they were doing those menial tasks.

The strangest thing that happened today was that we received a surprise visit from "His Grace," the bishop of the St. Moses the Black Ethiopian Orthodox Church that recently located in Saginaw. This man was walking spiritual intimidation, from the long black gown, the tall black hat, the medallion around his neck, the scepter in his hand (it probably has another name), and his "regal" walk and talk. Yes, this man looked like the pope in black. Marcia had the pleasure of showing the bishop around the mission (resulting in the addition of another impersonation to her repertoire), and his presence quickly became the topic of discussion among the staff. I think Jim summed it up best when he asked, "Who was that king, and what country does he run?"
