During the ladies' Bible study tonight, I used Joel's Sunday School attendance pin from his childhood as an example of legalistic motivation for good behavior in an attempt to earn favor with God. The award, which Joel proudly wore every Sunday until he was ten years old, is actually a pin with a string of six years worth of perfect attendance bars, so it's about 3 inches in length. One of the ladies quipped, "It's not in every church that a guy gets to wear a brooch."
