I learned two things at work today in amusing ways:
1. A 17 year old girl came to the rescue mission to inquire about volunteering. As I was looking over her application, she said, "I want you to know that I'm emanstipated." (spelling intended) I said, "Excuse me?", not really knowing what she was trying to tell me or if I heard her correctly. (I'm not going to divulge what was actually going through my mind.) She repeated, "I'm emanstipated." Realizing my lack of comprehension, she explained she is not under the authority of her parents. I finally got it! She was telling me she's been emancipated. So, I went back to our office and asked Marcia how people are emancipated today. She explained that sometimes teen girls file legal papers to become independent if they have had a baby, or for other reasons. News to me!
2. This afternoon, Marcia (rhymes with Garcia) was using her mirror to check out the gray hair along her hairline (it's slow going for Marcia these days). She was disgusted that her black hair rinse doesn't do the job. When I suggested she use a permanent marker, her face lit up. "Mascara!" she exclaimed, and she whipped out mascara from her purse. Sure enough, black mascara will cover the gray, but I don't think it would work well for me. : )
