SUMMER READING

I usually don't read much fiction, but I just finished an excellent historical fiction book entitled Cane River by Lalita Tademy. The author's story is rooted in years of research, historical fact, and family lore of her ancestors who lived during the Creole plantation life of Louisiana in the 1800s. The story's main characters are three generations of black women (Suzette, Philomene, and Emily), born into slavery, that had strength to overcome difficult life situations to make a better life for their children. Louisiana society at that time was comprised of the Creoles (white French-speaking people), the gens de couleur libre (free people of color) that had accumulated land and who were also slave owners, the mixed French/black families created by the Frenchmen (the author's ancestry), and the other slaves. I appreciated how the author draws the reader into her family history in such an emotionally captivating manner. I was sorry the story had to end.

My next book...No Place For Truth by David Wells. It was fun while it lasted!
