Love to Cook...Moi?

On Wednesday night, I attended my first meeting of the recently-formed Love to Cook Club.  The club was started by a number of area cooks who became friends while participating in a local radio station's cook-off contests.  The cooks have also become supporters of the Saginaw Rescue Mission and staff.  It's a delicious
arrangement! And that's how I got involved.

As we went around the room to do introductions, Pam asked everyone to give their name and one thing they really like to cook.  So when my turn came, I exposed my dirty little secret...I don't love to cook!  In fact, I'm trying to retire from cooking.  Well, not completely, but I do enjoy my semi-retirement.  I love good food, and the process of cooking has always been just a means to that end.  The enjoyment is in the eating!

Each month, the club meets at a locally-owned restaurant (no chains) for a meal, recipe and cookbook swap, and cooking demonstration.  This month we met at Oscar and Joey's Roadhouse, known for their wild game dinners.  I had walleye covered in creamy blueberry sauce, which was an unusual combination of flavors. The highlight of the night was Chef Dave's preparation of Bananas Foster, one of my top two desserts!  In the video below, Dave is adding rum, banana schnapps, and amaretto to the caramelized butter/brown sugar.  It was fabulous!  The only suggestion I would have for improvement would be to put the ice cream and sauce over a piece of toasted banana bread.  That would be heavenly!

Some of you readers might recognize the voice of "Listen to the Mrs." - Sue Smith.  Yes, she was there, and in rare form.  It's a fun group, and they encourage anyone interested in cooking...or eating...to join them.  The next meeting will be at Maggie's Omelettes in Bay City on April 2nd.
